Google Calendar helps you track all your events, personal and professional, in one place.

Using Google Calendar, you can:

  • 1. Share your schedule
Let your co-workers, students, family, and friends see your calendar, and view schedules that others have shared with you. When you know when others free or busy, scheduling is a snap.
  • 2. Get your calendar on the go
With two-way syncing to your mobile phone's built-in calendar or a mobile version of Google Calendar that's made for the small screen, you can access your calendar while you're away from your desk.
  • 3. Never forget another event again
Customizable reminders help you stay on schedule. You can choose to be notified by email or get a text message sent right to your mobile phone.
  • 4. Send invitations and track RSVPs
Invite other people to events on your calendar. Guests can RSVP to your events by email or via Google Calendar.
  • 5. Sync with your desktop applications
Access your calendar however and whenever you want by syncing events with Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal and Mozilla Sunbird.
  • 6. Work offline
Know where you're supposed to be even when you don't have internet access. With offline access, you can view a read-only version of your calendar no matter where you are.

Create a Google Calendar

(If you have already created one, please help a colleague)

Be sure you are logged into your Google account. If Calendar is not showing in the menus across the top, click on "more" and then navigate to Calendar .
  1. If you have not set up a calendar previously, you will have the opportunity at this point to do so. Your primary calendar is the first one you set up, using your full name.
  2. Look in the left column at the "my calendars" pane and you will see your calendar name. You will be using this calendar for your personal calendar. You will not share it publicly, but could share it with specific people if you wish.
  3. Add at least 5 events to this personal calendar for the rest of May.
  4. Add a second calendar by clicking the add button---determine WHAT will this calendar be for? club? classroom? team? teacher meetings?---name the calendar accordingly.
  5. Add at least 5 events to this second calendar for the rest of May.
  6. Click the calandar drop down arrow link and practice hiding and showing both calendars.
You need to make your calendar public in order for others to use your Calendar Address or to embed the calendar in a web page such as your classroom website. If you keep your calendar private, it will only be accessible to the people you shared it with using Google Calendar.
When you choose to make your calendar public, all of your events will appear in the public search results of Google Calendar and Google Web Search.
Additionally, everyone can view the calendar and its public events by adding it to their calendar list or using your Calendar Address.
To share a specific calendar with everybody, just follow these steps (you can change this setting at any time):
    1. In the calendar list on the left, click on the down-arrow button next to the appropriate calendar, then select Share this calendar.
    2. Select Make this calendar public.
    3. If you don't want others to view the details of your events, select See only free/busy (hide details).
    4. Click Save.
  7. Go into calendar "settings" to the general tab and change settings to your liking
  8. Try to embed your non-personal calendar into your classroom website---remember that it must be "public".
  9. Be ready to share an idea(s) for using Google Calendar in your professional life
